Burrard.ca Domain Sale and May 23 .ca TBR

It happens from time to time, and it happened this week.  Sometimes you'll see a .ca domain name sell around the same time as the matching .com.  This time it happened with Burrard.ca and Burrard.com.


Burrard.ca  -  $15,500  - sold by DomainAdvisors/DomainNameSales

Having lived in Vancouver, I know that Burrard street is a popular downtown street, and ofcourse there is also Burrard bridge.  It appears that both domains were previously owned by one company, and almost certainly were bought by the same buyer.  The two domains haven't been put to use yet, and from a little digging it looks like one of them is registered to a numbered company in Vancouver.  There are many businesses that use 'Burrard' in their name, some of the possible users of these domains would be Burrard yacht club, Burrard hotel, Burrard acura, and Burrard cinema.  What was also interesting was the price paid for each domain; the .ca was valued in the sale at just over half the .com.  I'm curious to see who the buyer is and what they will use the domains for.  Thanks to DNJournal.com for reporting these sales.

May 23 .ca TBR Results

For the second week in a row, the TBR results were less than stellar, and less than 150 domains were grabbed in the drop.  I took one domain in the drop that is near the end of the list.  I probably could have registered this domain after the drop for $10, but for the price of $35 it was worth getting it in the TBR, and who knows how many other people might have been hoping it slipped through the drop.

I saw one of the premium LLL.ca domains in auction after the TBR, and it went for around $500.

Dropping .CA Domains May 16 TBR

I was pretty busy last week and didn't have time to report the .ca TBR list of domains taken in the drop, so I'm getting to it today.

But before I do that, there was one .ca domain sale reported last week at DNJournal.com.

GiftCardExchange.ca  -  $6,700  - sold at Afternic/DLS

I checked what is happening with this domain today, and it is still parked on a Godaddy page.  I can imagine that gift card exchanges are a decent business.  I've seen kiosks in malls selling partly used gift cards that still have money left on them, for a slight discount.  It's a way for someone with a gift card they don't want to exchange it for some cash.  It also gives a person who wants a gift card at a certain shop a way to get one, for less than the card is worth, and the exchange takes the spread.  Since this domain is still on a parked page, we'll have to wait a little longer to see what happens with it.

Below is the list of 148 domains taken in last week's drop.  I didn't find any great names on this list, it seems that each week the quality is decreasing.  But I've said that before, and then one week you get a bunch of nice names showing up.  Thanks to Sibername for providing the list.  I've bolded some of the names I think are better quality.

Dropping .CA Domains May 9, 2012 TBR

I've posted the results of last week's .ca TBR below, but before we get to that there were some .ca domain sales in the past two week's worth noting.  Thanks to DNJournal for providing the sales numbers.

Greenfield.ca - $2,000 - sold at Sedo

Billetterie.ca - $1,000 - sold at Sedo  (french word for 'ticket booth' or 'cash dispenser')

Pair.ca - $6,750 - sold at Sedo

Pair.ca looks like it was sold to Pair Networks (web hosting services), and now forwards to Pair.com.

There are two .ca domains currently on auction at Sedo.  Right now, r8.ca is at $2,000 and nyp.ca is at $1,000.

Last week's .ca TBR took place on May 9.  A total of 5,965 .ca domains dropped.  Of those, 196 domains were taken at the TBR.  Thanks to Sibername for providing the list below.  I've bolded some of the names I think are better quality.

Happy 25th Birthday to .CA!

Time flies when you're having fun!

I remember back in 2000 (or was it 2001) when before that time the .ca extension was only able to be registered by Canadian businesses, or something to that effect.  'Normal' citizens of Canada weren't able to register a .ca.  Then in the fall of 2000, they opened up the .ca extension to all Canadians, or those with Canadian presence.

There was a month or two of landrush, when you could submit the names you wanted through a registrar.  If there was more than one applicant for a domain, it was given out at random to one of the applicants.  I still remember the day when I got the notices on whether I was succcessful or not.  Some names I got, and some I didn't.  Some names I got but ended up dropping in the early 2000's were jetskis.ca, investmentbrokers.ca, and commissions.ca.  Some names I got and still own are tina.ca and freeonline.ca.  There are probably a lot of names I should have taken that were still available then.

Today, there are almost 2 million .ca domain names registered.  It wasn't that long ago when .ca crossed the 1 million mark.

As an aside, in the early years the .ca registry was run on a volunteer basis at the University of BC, Vancouver (starting in 1987).  I went to that university from 1989 to about '93, little did I know when was going on right around the corner from me!  It would be nice to go back in time and drop in on the volunteers who were operating the .ca extension.

So Happy Birthday to .ca, may you have 25+ more years of success and keep increasing in popularity in the hearts of Canadians!

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA, May 11, 2012 (MARKETWIRE via COMTEX) -- Monday, May 14th marks the 25th anniversary of the dot-CA domain name for Canada. On this date twenty five years ago the management of the dot-CA country code domain name was officially delegated by Jon Postel, operator of Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA), to Canadian Internet pioneer and Webnames.ca co-founder John Demco.
The most recognizable symbol of Canadian identity on the Internet, dot-CA was conceived in 1987 and for 13 years, John Demco, with the assistance of a group of dedicated volunteers, managed the dot-CA domain space out of his University of British Columbia office on behalf of all Canadians, allocating and administering dot-CA domain names at no charge to users on a voluntary basis. By 2000 an amazing 100,000 dot-CA domain names had been registered under John's care, exceeding the capacity of a volunteer undertaking. "In the very early days of .CA, it wasn't apparent that the registry would grow so quickly," said John Demco, "However, by the late 1980's the academic and research networks had begun to grow rapidly, even though the absolute numbers weren't yet large. With the introduction of the web and commercialization, things really took off."
In December 2000, the Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA), a not-for-profit corporation took over operation of dot-CA. Since that time CIRA has accredited more than 90 registrars (including Webnames.ca) to act as retailers of dot-CA domains to the Canadian public.
The dot-CA domain name has become an important symbol of Canadian identity and presence. "Canadians prefer to do business with fellow Canadians and support the local economy," says Webnames.ca President and Co-Founder, Cybele Negris. "Dot-CA shows website visitors that they are shopping locally, will pay in Canadian funds and receive product shipped from within the country. May 14th is a special day and we should all celebrate the success of the Canadian Internet. I'm proud to have been involved with John and the transition of dot-CA to CIRA back in 1999/2000 and I look forward to see what the next 25 years will bring."
The dot-CA domain name has celebrated many milestones over the past 25 years including the celebration of one million dot-CA domains registered in 2008. We are anticipating the two million dot-CA registration some time in 2012. "One never knows what might happen, especially in an environment as dynamic as the Internet. However, dot-CA has been performing well since its inception, and particularly well during the past few years, and we can look forward to continued strong growth" anticipates John Demco. "There is also ample room to grow. The dot-CA domain will soon surpass 2 million registrations, but it should be kept in mind that the dot-COM domain has approximately 100 million. Thus although dot-CA has grown rapidly there are many, many excellent names available."

Shop.ca looks to lead Canadian online shopping

First of all, Happy Mother's Day to all the mothers out there!

A new Canadian company branded as Shop.ca is coming to the Canadian marketplace.

Aside from having a great domain name, I think their idea is a good one.  Whenever I shop online, I like to deal in Canadian dollars and like to see the shipping come from Canada.  It is just easier in my mind to deal with stores in your own country.  From their own research, it seems like the Canadian online market is fragmented between many stores, and Canadians on percentage do less of their shopping online than many other countries, even though we are heavy internet users.

In addition to the expected convenience, Shop.ca is giving people $10 towards their first $100 purchase if you join now, plus they have a rewards and loyalty program.  They haven't opened yet but are set to launch soon.  There is a website up already on the domain.

Does anyone remember seeing the domain name Shop.ca sell, and for how much?


How Shop.ca works:


1. Retailers and merchants sign agreements with Shop.ca to offer their wares for sale through its website. They list and manage the products themselves, and must offer their full catalogue at prices no greater than they themselves charge online.
2. Shop.ca sells the products and sends the orders to the merchants.
3. Merchants ship the orders directly to Shop.ca’s customers within three to five business days.
4. Shop.ca pays a negotiated percentage of the sale price to the merchants after delivery.
5. Shop.ca doesn’t maintain an inventory or warehouse. It pays for returns, but these are sent directly to the merchant.
Shop.ca’s loyalty program - Shop.ca Rewards:
Shoppers earn virtual dollars to be used against future Shop.ca purchases every time they buy a product on the site. They can also earn dollars for writing reviews or referring products on social media that result in purchases by others. With shoppers able to earn up to 2.5 per cent in virtual cash back, “it’s potentially one of the richest loyalty programs ever launched in Canada,” CEO Drew Green said. Shop.ca is also offering additional incentives to shoppers who sign up before launch and refer others to its website.
