Jobs.ca Leads Weekly Domain Sales and December 18 .CA TBR Drop Results

The week before Christmas featured a slow TBR with only 102 .ca domains taken in yesterday's December 18 drop.  The bigger news this week was the two .ca domain sales reported at DNJournal.com.

Those two sales were:

Jobs.ca  -  $450,000  -  sold at Sedo

G1.ca  -  $6,500  -  sold at Sedo

Jobs.ca was the top overall domain sale this week.  I remember it was big news when the sellers originally bought the domain back in 2008 for $600,000.  They turned it into a fully functioning Canadian jobs website, and the new owner will likely do the same.  The sellers are still involved in other Canadian job websites, so it will be interesting to see how it all plays out.  The proceeds from the sale of Jobs.ca will give the sellers a lot of options.

G1.ca was the 11th overall sale for country code domains.  I am not sure who the buyer of G1.ca is, but the domain already resolves to a website that offers free G1 practice tests, a type of driving test in Ontario for new drivers.

Back to the TBR, some of the better names that were taken include:

There were a few of my dropped domains in this week's TBR, namely 018.ca, 025.ca and 026.ca.  They weren't doing much for me but still finished near the top.  Hopefully the new owners will find a good use for them.

Superbowl.ca Hits High in December 4 .CA TBR Domain Results

 This week's TBR .ca domain drop on December 4 featured a total of 138 .ca domains that were grabbed.  This was right in line with most recent TBR's.  There were no great domains available in my opinion, but there were some one word names, and some keywords with meaning.

 In this week's DNJournal.com sales report there was one .ca domain sale noted.  Last week included the US Thanksgiving holiday, so sales activity appeared to be a bit tempered compared to a normal week.  The top overall domain sale was only $29,000 - whereas the top overall sale is usually in the upper five figures, or higher.  The single .ca entry was:

Naspers.ca - $1,500 - Sold at Sedo

A quick search of 'naspers' reveals that Naspers is the name of a South Africa-based multinational media company with principal operations in electronic media.  Another check on DomainTools shows that the new contact information for the domain is to someone located in South Africa with a connection to Media24.com, a news site that is connected to Naspers.   I think it's safe to say they were the buyer of this domain, though it doesn't yet resolve to a website.

On another note, I was once again pleased with how long Sibername.com holds .ca domains after the expiry date. One of my .ca domains slipped through their 40 day grace period (after the expiry date), yet they still didn't delete it and I was able to recover it.  Most registrars only allow 30 days after expiry before it goes into the TBR pool.  To me, this is one of Sibername's best features.

New Social Media site with a Celebrity Twist - MobioINsider.com

I like to follow the stocks of junior companies, usually mining and resources, however sometimes something different comes along.

A company that was recently brought to my attention is called LX Ventures (LXV.V).  They are based in Vancouver and their website is at LXventures.com.  In short, they are an incubator for tech start ups, acquiring companies and helping them get to the next level.  Usually these types of companies are private, but in this case LX Ventures trades on the TSX Venture exchange, and also recently started trading in the OTC market in the US.  To be sure, investing in companies on these smaller exchanges can be a bumpy ride, but they do sometimes produce winners.

One of the good things about LX Ventures is that it is run by people who have actually created and sold tech start ups before.  They also have some interesting, seasoned advisors:  http://www.lxventures.com/s/Management.asp

One of their most advanced companies is called MobioINsider.com.  How does it work?  It is a social media site where fans can follow celebrities, but the twist on it (compared to Twitter or Facebook) is that celebrities get a % of the ad revenues generated from their fans.  They can take the earnings or pass it along to a charity.  When a celebrity posts a picture, video, or anything else, a visitor to the site will have to watch a short ad first to see it.  Not every time, but sometimes.  This is similar to how YouTube sometimes makes you watch a video ad before you see the content you want.  The celebrities leverage their Twitter and Facebook accounts to drive traffic to their Mobio pages, where fans can interact with them.

I think their model is workable, the only thing is they have to sign up enough celebrities to make it work.  So far they have signed Lucy Hale, Bella Thorne, Paul Wesley, Slash (from Guns n Roses), Scott Disick, Pamela Anderson (of Baywatch fame), Jessica Gomes (model), Romeo Miller, and Brody Jenner.  Together these celebs have millions of Twitter and Facebook followers, and there is more to come.  If Mobio can scale fast and get enough celebs and fans, I think it has a chance for success.  I don't think it will be the next Twitter or Facebook, but even a site like Snapchat with no revenues is commanding billion dollar offers.  Mobio has built monetization into their site from day one.  Right now the market cap for LX Ventures is well below $100 million, and they do have other functioning startups, including Copper.io which is in the cloud space.

Aside from being worth a look as an investment, if you're a fan of any celebrity or sports star, you may soon be able to interact with them on Mobio.

LX Ventures has had a wild ride in the last few weeks, running from below 20 cents to almost a dollar, and today back down to the 60 cent range.  I think their Mobio INsider company has a good chance of success if it gets supported by enough celebrities.  I can see fans returning again and again to the site to ask questions and see responses (and in turn view the ads).  Already in the first week of operation, it appears to me that the model is working, as many fans are already posting comments and questions. And yes, their site is mobile friendly for viewing and ads!

Spaceship.ca takes Flight in November 27 .CA TBR Drop Results

The number of .ca domains taken in last week's November 27 TBR Drop was a little higher than in previous weeks, with 151 .ca names grabbed.  I didn't see any great keyword generics, but there were still some good names in the list.

There were no .ca domain sales reported in the week up to November 27.  Perhaps we will see some sales when DNJournal releases their weekly sales report this Wednesday.

It has been interesting to see the start of the gtld rollout.  Some extensions have already gone live, though none yet that have caused me to rush out and check for available keywords.  There are a few gtld's that interest me, if I can get the right keywords.  One of them is .web, which isn't available yet.  It is still early days for the gtld's, but in the coming weeks and months we should start to get an idea of how they are impacting the domain world.  My time spent on domains lately is mostly deciding which of my names to renew as they come up, the majority of which are .ca and .com, but also a few others like .net, .co, .me, and .es.  Domains that I have built webpages for and get traffic are definitely keepers.  I am dropping most of my .mobi unless it is a keyword I really like, such as a popular first name.
