What Other Extensions Were Available to Buyer of Hueston.com (sold for $25,000)?

Often when I look into hand registering a domain, I'm looking for a .com or a .ca.  Depending on the search word or term, I may also be interested in a .net or .org, and these days maybe even a new gtld if I can get a good keyword match to the extension word.  I like to check for names at a registrar that shows what's available in a good number of common extensions, to get an idea of how popular that keyword or search term is.  If the term I'm searching for is taken in a high number of extensions, I know it has some degree of popularity.

On a similar note, sometimes when I see a domain sell for a good amount (normally a .com), I sometimes check to see what other extensions were available to the buyer.  For example, if they paid a six figure amount for a .com, but could have hand registered the same domain in .biz, .info and .org, it gives you a sense of .com's importance, and that some buyers really prefer having the .com.

I've listed some of this weeks top reported domain sales below.  I checked these words/terms against 14 possible extensions to see what is still available to hand register in the exact term (see below for list of 14 extensions I checked).  It's possible that some extensions were registered right after these sales were reported, but this is what's available as of the time of this post.

1) Yin.com - sold for $180,000.

Yin.xxx still available to register, other extensions all taken.

2) Peng.com- sold for $80,000.

 Peng.xxx still available to register, other extensions all taken.

3) Hacked.com - sold for $50,000

Hacked.mobi still available to register, other extentions all taken.

4) Hueston.com - sold for $25,000

Hueston.net, .ca, .info, .us, .mobi, .co, .xxx, .eu, .me, .tv still available to register.  (.org, .biz, .name taken).

5) Foodline.com - sold for $14,000

Foodline.org, .ca, .us, .name, .co, .me, .tv still available to register.  (.net, .biz, .info, .mobi, .xxx, .eu taken)

I think the last two domains are the most interesting, as buyers were willing to pay five figures for the .com instead of getting a .net, a .org, and a number of other available options.  You'd think the .net and .org might at least get registered for defensive reasons.  In addition, there are dozens of new gtlds that are probably still available in these terms.  Do buyers know about the new gtld options, or are they simply motivated to own their domain of choice in .com?

Bargains Galore at December 17 .CA TBR Drop + Two .CA Domain Sales

Today's .ca domain drop featured a total of 93 .ca domains that were caught.  That is a little lower than recent drops, but I think the name quality was better this week than last.

Here are a couple of recent .ca domain sales I'm aware of:

Musica.ca  -  $950 US  - sold at Sedo

BO.ca  -  $2,599 US  -  sold at Sedo

I wasn't able to find out who bought bo.ca, but it looks like the buyer of Musica.ca was Musica Music School Inc of Toronto.  Their current website domain is MusicaMusicSchoolToronto.com, so I think the shorter Musica.ca will be better for their promotion (easy to remember and spell) and for people who use it for an email address.  This is a good example of an organization changing to a one word .ca URL from a longer four word .com.  I'm sure Musica.com would cost a pretty penny being the Spanish word for music, but in Canada the Spanish language isn't used much, making a Spanish word .ca more attainable.

In other Canadian related domain news, the Canadian Real Estate Association (CREA) won the auction to run the new gtld .MLS with their bid of $3,359,000.  In the auction they beat out Afilias Limited.  I think it's pretty obvious that CREA will use the .mls extension somehow for their well known (and trademarked) Multiple Listing Services system of Canadian real estate.  Or perhaps it is some kind of defensive move.  Another organization that perhaps could have benefitted from this extension is the MLS soccer association.  CREA also owns Realtor.ca and MLS.ca.

December 10 .CA Domain Drop & 200,000 Page Views!

Today marks another small milestone for this .ca domain blog, in that it has surpassed a total of 200,000 page views since it's beginning.  I realize some domain blogs get that traffic within a week or a month, but for a blog that focuses on a small country code domain that's not too bad!  Much thanks to Domaining.com from where a lot of my traffic comes, and also Namebee.com which sends a little traffic too.  It's great to be able to find all the domain blogs in one place, and I'm also one of those who checks in to Domaining.com almost every day to see the new domain headlines.

In yesterday's .ca TBR domain drop, there were 124 .ca domains grabbed.  There was nothing too special in my opinion, but some of the better ones were:

OrganicPlus.ca

 USO.ca

 CDG.ca

 SmartFactory.ca  (nice startup name)

 VisitJamaica.ca

 Wheelbarrows.ca

 BreadBox.ca

 Thibault  (common French surname)

There was one .ca domain sale reported at DNJournal.com this past week:

Zestra.ca  -  $1,200 - sold at Sedo

Although Zestra.ca currently doesn't resolve to a website, it appears that it was bought by Zestra.com, a seller of all natural essential oils and botanicals for women.  So here is an example of a company buying their domain in a country code, to either protect their brand name or possibly for future marketing to Canadians.

On a recent trip to Vancouver, I noticed a lot of store signs and vehicle signs listed their domain name (mostly .com and .ca).  One store even had just the domain name as their main storefront sign (ColorCopy.ca).  Walking around the West End near Denman, most of the apartment and condo buildings had the property management company sign in front which included a domain name.  It is amazing that when I lived in Vancouver about 20 years ago you would never have seen a domain anywhere, now you can't escape them.  It makes me think that as most of the great .com and .ca domains get taken up, there might be room for some of the new gtld's for the people and businesses that will need a domain name in the future.

December 3 .ca TBR Drop Results and .CA Sales Talk

This week's TBR .ca drop wasn't as good as last week, with only 91 .ca domains taken (vs 171 domains last week).  Also, there weren't any LL.ca or stellar one word domains, like there were last week, but you can't expect those to be dropping all the time.

I posted about the launch of the new gtld .property last week, and further to that it has had some side benefits for me.  I've found a number of 'CityProperty' .com's available to be registered while searching for hand regs.  If you check you'll find that most sizeable cities are taken in their 'CityProperty' .com form, for example SpringfieldProperty.com.  The largest city I found available to hand register like this was GrandForksProperty.com.  Grand Forks is a large city in North Dakota with a population around 55,000 (metro population over 100,000).  It was a nice surprise to find an available domain like this.

There was one .ca domain sale reported in the last week at Sedo, and that was:

Scaffolding.ca  -  $2,000

 This domain looks to have been bought by Scaffold Russ Dilworth Ltd, an Ontario Scaffolding company.  They already have a website up on the domain.

 FF.ca  - this domain dropped last week and went to a one-day auction, where it closed at over $5,000.  I didn't see the final price but needless to say it wasn't a good domain for someone to drop.  There were other nice domains that dropped and went to auction last week, but I wasn't part of those auctions and didn't see the final prices.

As for today's drop, some of the better names on the list were:
