CIRA Removes Canadian Presence Requirement for .CA & April 1 .CA TBR Drop Results

Today's .ca TBR Drop returned a higher than average number of .ca names, with 145 domains taken.  There were a few good names available this week.

There were no reported .ca domain sales in the past week that I'm aware of.

I received an email today from CIRA that the 2015 .CA Factbook is now out and available to see online.  The Factbook goes over the topics of Domain Name history, the Global Internet, the Canadian Internet, and .CA Domain Performance.  So it is an overall look at domain names and internet, with additional focus on Canada.  Right now there are over 2.3 Million .ca domain names registered.  CIRA is the body that manages the .ca registry.

In other news today from Sloof Lirpa media, CIRA announced that they are removing the Canadian Presence requirement for .ca domain ownership, which now makes the .ca extension available to anyone to register, much like .me, .co, and .es.  This should provide a boost to .ca domain registrations and make it easier for those outside Canada to do business online with Canadians.

    I almost got excited and then I remembered it was April 1st. The best thing that CIRA could do is remove Canadian presence requirements.
    Come one CIRA. It would actually improve the extension.

    I know it's April Fools and all, but joking about the CIRA removing the Canadian presence requirements is the least funny thing I've seen all day. I've wanted this to happen for as long as I can remember, and for a split second... well, let's just say that I kind of hate you now :P
