.CA TBR drop Results for December 19 2012

This week's TBR didn't feature any great domains, and only a few I would call good.  Ofcourse I could be missing a gem here or there, but I think I'm close to the mark.  Before I get to the TBR results, there was one reported .ca sale at DNJournal.com for the past week, which was catalyst.ca.  It was #20 on the overall domain sales list, and #2 on the country codes list.

Catalyst.ca  -  $14,000  - sold at DomainNameSales.com

I reported this sale earlier when I saw it come across the DNS news feed, at a $10k to $20k range, so now we know the final price.  The domain still doesn't resolve, so it remains to be seen who the buyer is.

To me, it was a below average week for the TBR.  Only 174 domains were grabbed, and quite a few were typos or appear to be tm type domains.  I bolded a few below that I thought were better quality names.  I took one name in the TBR this week, which was WhiterockHomes.  Whiterock is a coastal community just south of Vancouver, close to the US border.

I've heard that the December 26 TBR has been cancelled, which will allow some of us to enjoy our Christmas without the worry of what domains are dropping the next day (and not interfere with any Boxing Day shopping).  The following TBR in the first week of January 2013 should therefore be a big one!

Domain Buyers Aren't Waiting for New Gtld's

After this week's gtld draw, many sources are now indicating that the soonest we'll see a new gtld roll out is mid-2013, and it's likely that the later roll outs will be happening in 2014.  My opinion is that it could take even longer with all the necessary reviews and lawsuits that have been filed so far.  But who knows, we'll just have to sit back and see what happens.

While I wouldn't say that 2012 has been a stellar year for reported domain sales, I would say that sales appear to be steady and regular.  The top 20 weekly sales always have domains in the five figure range, six figure sales occurred often, and there is still the odd million dollar plus sale as we saw last week with Investing.com.  The DomainNameSales.com site has also changed the game, allowing anyone to see the inquiries and interest that come in by the minute, and the price quotes that go out.

The top sales are still mostly in the .com extension, with country codes, .net and .org often having strong representation.

To me, the weekly domain sales report by DNJournal is kind of a futures chart, or barometer.  Given we are likely less than a year away from a host of new gtlds, shouldn't domain buyers be holding back and waiting for them, if they are going to change the internet landscape?  Why are buyers today still spending thousands or hundreds of thousands of dollars every week on domain names, when the available pool of extensions is about to increase almost exponentially?  When markets (in general) know there is going to be a coming increase in supply, it usually puts downward pressure on prices.  Like I mentioned above, though domain sales prices aren't going through the roof (like it seemed in 2007), they have continued to be steady in volume and in price range, with millions of dollars in total reported sales occurring every week.

The only answer I can see is that domain buyers find the comfort and assurance they need in owning their preferred keyword(s) in .com, .net, .org, or a strong country code.  Though the selection pool is about to increase with new gtlds, domains aren't a commodity like gold or silver, where one ounce is the same as the next, and that makes the difference.  The weekly domain sales tell me that domain buyers are either unaware of the new gtlds, or aren't too concerned about it.  If they are unaware of the pending gtlds at this point, that is also saying something!

When the new gtlds start coming out, keywords that fit the extensions will do well, but for most gtlds this will be a relatively short list.  Examples of names that I'd expect to do well in the market are ones like:

Free.online

Flowers.shop

Download.app

Atlanta.hotel

Rap.music

LasVegas.casino

Sales of country codes, gtlds and domain hacks where the keyword fits the extension in a clever or brandable way have often done well in the past.  The Meet.me sale in the mid six figure range is an extreme example of this, and my guess is Love.me and Date.me will have similar or better results.  Even Payment.mobi sold this month for $12,900 (an attempt to take advantage of the rise in mobile commerce?) - and many domainers have completely written off that extension.

While there will be some winners like the above in the new wave of gtlds, I don't think existing holders of good to very good domains in .com and other top extensions should be too worried.  Domain buyers certainly aren't sitting back and waiting for the new gtlds in a meaningful way, judging by how domain sales continue to roll along every week.

What Makes a Good (or Great) Affiliate Program?

When I started out trying to earn some income online, it was with domaining, but not like it is today.  Back then (around 2000), you bought domains and listed them for sale.  I didn't know about parking, I couldn't build webpages, so you were purely hoping someone wanted that domain and would offer to buy it.  The internet was practically brand new and growing, and it seemed like domains would be in demand.  Some big sales had even been reported at the time, like Business.com.

Eventually, I found a free website builder that made it easy to build webpages (mostly point and click, as easy as using Microsoft Word).  Then I discovered affiliate programs.  You mean if I put a link on my webpage, and someone clicks through and buys something, I'll earn a commission?  You can track that?  Sounds great, the internet is taking off, webpages are open for business 24/7, maybe there's something to it!

So after years of dealing with affiliate programs, I've learned that not all affiliate programs are equal.  I did do a post in 2001 called My Favorite Affiliate Program that is still valid, however it's a home business / network marketing type affiliate program.  If you have a domain with traffic that is in the home business or work at home market, this would be a great affiliate program for that.

Here are some general tips on what to look for or avoid in affiliate programs.

- Affiliate programs should have an easy sign up, and be free to join and try out.  If a company makes it hard for you to join their affiliate program, with a long approval process, to me it's a warning sign that they could be hard to deal with in other areas.

- Choose a company that has a product or service you know about, and ideally use yourself.  If you have dealt with the company as a customer, and are happy with them, it will make it so much easier to promote them in your marketing.  For example, I'm a long time Godaddy customer and also an affiliate of theirs.  As a satisfied customer, I find it easy to recommend them to others.

- If the company lets customers join or sign up for an account for free, that's great.  It allows them to track that customer and keep them tied to you, so if they buy something in the future you'll earn a commission.  If the people you send to their site have to buy something then and there, and aren't tracked for you, it's harder to earn.

- The company doesn't deduct fees from your affiliate earnings.  Some sites like Clickbank and Commission Junction have a nice variety of products and companies to promote, however if you go through a slow period they will deduct fees from your earnings, some kind of administration fee.  If you are earning commissions for every period then this doesn't apply, but features like this can eat away at your earnings.  Another drawback with Clickbank and CJ is that if you promote a lot of their links on different sites, you have to keep track of programs or products that get discontinued, which means you'd have links on your pages that don't work.  A plus is that if you can find one of their products or companies that work for you, it can be magic.

- The upgrade feature.  Good dating affiliate programs, for example, let people join free and upgrade later (which you'll earn a commission from).  If you are getting a lot of free sign ups to a program, but no one upgrades, you should think of changing programs.

- They have a good % payout.  Some companies I've seen have affiliate payouts of 1% to 3% on sales.  That is super low and not really worth your time, unless you can generate a huge volume of sales.  I once generated a sale of several hundred dollars for a travel site, and only earned something like $5.  Not worth my time!  On the flipside, one dating company I'm an affiliate for pays $55 per upgrade (even if the cost of their upgrade was less).  And the upgrade ratio is good.  Make sure the commission is worth your time.

-  Good quality and easy to use affiliate links and banners that update themselves.  Give me good marketing materials!  Text links normally work better than banners, but the company should give you good ad copy for links and banners that are attractive (and update themselves).  I hate banners or links that have end dates and have to be changed, that can take up a lot of time.  Some companies I've seen even make it hard for you to find a simple text link to use.  If they have good marketing materials with cut and paste HTML, it's a sign they're serious about their affiliate program.

- They pay regularly by cheque or paypal, with low minimums and on time.  Don't make me have to earn $500 to trigger a payment.  As little as $25 or $50 should trigger a payment, and payments should be processed every 2 to 4 weeks, which is reasonable.  I can renew 3 domains with $25.

- Good affiliate stats.  The program should let you see how much traffic you send to their site on a daily basis, when you make sales, and how your commission is calculated.  Surprisingly, not all affiliate programs do this!

- Sub affiliates.  Does the affiliate program let you refer other affiliates, and then earn a percentage off their efforts?  If so, it can add to your earnings, especially if you sign up a winner!

A few other notes on affiliate programs:

-  Choose a company that offers a product or service related to your domain or webpage content.  For example, a domain blog should promote domains, domain services and website services.  Not children's clothing.  The exception is some products or services are general and can go on almost any site, because some % of the population may always be interested (e.g.: dating).  If you know of any programs like that that work for you, let me know!  In general though, keep it related to your content.

- If you have a good domain with type in traffic, and that traffic is looking for a specific product or service, consider pointing that domain directly to an affiliate link.  If you can match a domain to a good affiliate program, you may not have to build a webpage and create content, unless you decide to build a business on the domain.  If you are able to do this, though, make sure you check that the affiliate link is up and running on a regular basis, because if the link isn't working you aren't earning.  I often see domains on parked pages that I believe could do better if paired with a good affiliate program.

- To add to the previous point, test your links and banners after you set them up to make sure they work and are tracking.  After this, monitor them when you can to see that they keep working.  Nothing like checking a webpage after a few months and finding that that banner is now non-functional.

- Are you getting paid?  If after two to three months you've been sending traffic to a site, and haven't earned anything, it's time to change it up.  Can you promote it differently, or should you just switch affiliate programs?  Decide what's best.  Maybe three months is too long to wait!

-  Test everything.  Test links and banners, where you put them on your page, the ad copy you use.  Always test and use what works, and drop what doesn't.  When you find an affiliate program that works, it's great.

-  Fewer good affiliate programs are better than lots of bad ones.  Don't load your webpages up with multiple affiliate links from lots of programs.  Find the good ones that work and promote those.  Put your efforts into the programs that give you a return.

-  Use some Adsense.  The Adsense program through Google has a good feature, which is you will earn something on every clickthrough.  It complements affiliate earnings very well, and in some cases I've found works better.

Affiliate programs are but one way to earn online.  They can be a good part of your online income if you choose the right ones for your webpages.  Hopefully I've given you a few good ideas that can help with your web marketing, if I think of any more points I will add them to this post.

.CA domain name TBR Results for 12-12-12

DomainReport.ca

Yesterday was the last day of this century where we will see the day, month and last two digits of the year all be the same - 12/12/12.  I saw on the news that there were a higher number of weddings that day in China, because it's a lucky date.  However, even though yesterday was a somewhat special day in history, the .ca TBR drop that happened yesterday wasn't so special (though there were a few good names in it).

The DNJournal sales report usually comes out on Wednesday of every week but is delayed this week due to the publisher Ron Jackson being out of town, on a trip I bet he's enjoying.  The domain sales report will instead come out on Friday evening, Dec 14 according to a note on his website.

I didn't see any .ca sales get reported at Sedo or Afternic this week, but I did notice one five figure sale that came across at DomainNameSales.com.

Catalyst.ca  -  sold for $10,000 to $20,000 range.

DNS doesn't report exact sales prices, but we might see the final price come out if another sales venue was involved (such as Sedo).  Still, anywhere in that range looks to be a nice price for that domain.  My guess is that the domain was purchased by Catalyst Paper out of Richmond, British Columbia.  They are a large enough company to have paid that price for a domain, the keyword being their exact company name.

I didn't backorder any domains in the TBR this week, because there weren't any keywords or keyword combos I normally go after.  A total of 229 .ca domains were caught in this week's drop, which is a bit above normal.  This was partly due to a group of NNN.ca and LLL.ca domains that dropped, which often get taken no matter what.  I have bolded some of the better quality and more interesting domains in the Results list below.

Update on Godaddy's Premium .INFO Domain Name Auction

Godaddy is currently running a premium .info domain name auction.  What makes it interesting is that the domains in the auction have never been offered before, there is basically no-reserve, and there are some pretty good names in the inventory.  The auction ends on December 14.

With four days left to go, some of the current top names and top bid amounts are:

Finance.info  -  $3,639

 City.info  -  $2,980

 Cancer.info  -  $2,179

 Loans.info  -  $2,080

 Property.info  -  $2,021

 Diet.info  -  $1,982

 Event.info  -  $1,982

Many names have multiple bidders, and I'd expect that bidding activity will increase as the December 14 deadline approaches.

Given that new gtld's are likely to start coming out next year, this is probably a good time to auction off these premium .info's, before the gtld selection gets a lot bigger.

Tout.com - New Video Social Network 15 seconds

If you are not completely social networked out by now, there is a fairly new video social network you may want to know about.

The name of their website is Tout.com, and I learned about it through listening to the CNBC business news this week, when they had the CEO on.

How does it work?

You join first with your Facebook login, or an email login and password.  Then you can choose a username.

The idea of the network is to create 15 second video clips, using the camera on your smartphone, tablet or computer.  You upload the clip, type something about it, and that is your post.  It is similar to Twitter in that you have a limit to your post (15 seconds), so it is great for short attention spans.  I uploaded their iphone app, and it is really easy to use to create a video clip for upload with an iphone.  If I can figure it out, I know anyone can.

What is it good for?

I can see people using Tout to do video status updates, to show where they are, what they are doing, and to give quick bits of information, and so on.  It is very user friendly, so I can see it catching on.

One thing I would like to see added is a place for a personal website url.  Right now I can't see one, the user dashboard is pretty bare bones.

The best part?

If you decide to try it, there are some really good usernames still available from what I saw.  Chances are you can get a good one or two word keyword combination of your choice.  The site is about one year old, but the first I heard of it was this week.  If you have some spare time, check it out and see how you like it.

December 5 .CA Sales and TBR Drop Results

The .ca TBR results from yesterday are out and posted below.  It wasn't a stellar week, but there were a few good names.  As for .ca domain sales in the past week, there were no five figure sales reported as we saw in November, but still a couple sales of note.

GetJobs.ca  -  $1,300   sold at Sedo

NextDoor.ca  -  $750

GetJobs.ca is currently forwarding to GetGoodJob.ca.  I think GetJobs.ca is an improvement over the other domain.

NextDoor.ca is registered under Mark Monitor, but there is a social network site at NextDoor.com.

Below is the list of .ca domains that were grabbed in the drop this week.  I've bolded some of the better and more interesting names.  I picked up one name in the drop, which was boynames.ca.  It has over 3,000,000 Google global searches and close to 200,000 local searches.  Many expecting parents search for baby names on the internet, and half the time I imagine they are looking for 'boy names'.  It will be easy and fun for me to put up a few webpages on popular names for baby boys.  Thanks to Sibername for providing the TBR list.
