A total of 129 .ca domains were taken in the January 13 TBR drop. It wasn't as strong a drop as the one on January 6, which had many more good generic words and terms.
One of the things I've been looking at closest going into 2016 is whether the Chinese domain invasion for short CHIP domains will continue from where it left off in 2015. Some people seem worried that because Chinese stock markets have been in trouble, that this will affect the domain market. Well, stock markets in China began their decline back in 2015, while at the same time the domain market was heating up for the kinds of names that Chinese buyers like. So personally I don't see a strong correlation between Chinese stock markets and the domain aftermarket. In fact, in the past 15 years when US and European stock markets crashed or pulled back severely, I remember being surprised at how well the domain market held up. Weekly domain sales reports stayed reasonably strong even when stock markets and other parts of the economy weren't doing so well. If Chinese stock markets continue to weaken, more Chinese may actually turn to domains as an alternate investment.
So a few things I see when I think of CHIP domains and the China influence:
- Owning quality domains purchased at a reasonable price as some of your investments can provide some diversification along with other traditional investments.
- Everything goes up and down in price. Ask anyone who bought gold at $1900/oz or oil at $150/brl. Any market has ups and downs, just look at 2, 5, and 10 year charts. So a pullback in LLLL.com Chip prices, for example, doesn't mean everything is falling apart.
- If there is a severe economic downturn, I'm sure domains would be affected, but so would most other investments. Just because CHIP domains have gone up so fast, doesn't mean they're going to give it all back. Markets can go up for a long time before a severe pullback. On the way up, sometimes markets pause or pull back somewhat before the next run.
- There will be a lot of new Chinese domain investors (and investors from all parts of the world) coming into the domain market in 2016. Domain infrastructure and services are expanding. Many domain conferences are happening in China and worldwide in 2016. This will all bring new people and attention to domain investing.
- I believe there really is a limited supply of short domains in meaningful extensions, vs the amount of domain investors and natural demand for them. Extensions that are short, with no restrictions, and easy to push or transfer to new owners. Chinese investors have pushed into extensions that no one thought would have value. They use extensions from other countries if there is some meaning or it's easy to type. Maybe things have gone too far into longer domain strings and exotic extensions, and there will be some giveback, but the reality is that the availability and price of short .com's now puts them out of reach of most of the world's population. And from what I hear the next round of new gtld's is a few years away, so the extensions we have now are the ones we have to live with for a while.
- I might be wrong, but so far in 2016 Chip domains have held up, and the inquiries and prices I see offered are generally up now compared to the end of 2015. So this train is still rolling along. Short domains that could be registered for $10 less than a year ago can sell today for $200 to $450, and I'm not even talking .com's. It's not hype, I know it for a fact. If you owned stock that went from a $10 share price to $300 in less than a year, that would be hitting it out of the park.
- Expect a slowdown over the Chinese New Year in February, similar to what we traditionally see during the Christmas and New Year's period. In the meantime, looking on Godaddy auctions today, I see 61725.com at $4600, JWW.net at $4200, DJMM.com at $3686, HNMS.com at $3672, and RRR.cc at $3109, and on and on. All with over 30 bids and 3 or more days left in auction. So maybe the slowdown hasn't started yet.
- It would be great to see more connection between East and West domain markets. Right now I don't think there is a domain market or auction website that can seamlessly be used by Chinese and English buyers and sellers. Hopefully there is one in the works. It is great seeing some of the Chinese domain investors in forums like Namepros, but I'm sure they are just the tip of the iceberg. A domain blog written in English from someone in China, giving unbiased information and perspective on what is happening with domains in China, would also be nice to see.
- As a Canadian, lately it's been more risky to hold the Canadian dollar than it has been to hold domains! The Canadian dollar is only worth about 70 cents US today. Back in 2014 it traded between 90 and 95 cents US.
