CIRA moves IDN .ca agenda forward

Last year CIRA started talks on the possibility of creating IDN domains with the .ca extension to accommodate the french language, which is one of the two official languages of Canada.  French is spoken as a first language by millions of Canadians, most of whom live in Quebec.


The first round of consultations is complete, and the results are posted on their site (link below).


CIRA has now made changes to their IDN proposal based on the feedback received, and these changes can also be seen on their site.  I read through the changes and I like them at first glance.  Basically they will treat IDN registrations like they used to treat provincial codes.  For example, if you owned Money.ca, no one could register Money.qc.ca or Money.bc.ca and so on without your approval.  The same thing will go with IDN's, for example if you own celebrite.ca, no one can register célébrité.ca, célébrite.ca or celébrité.ca without your permission.  Any letters with possible accents are therefore protected in domains you already own.  I don't know how they will do this, because there are so many possibilities for accent combinations, but I'm sure it's possible.


This also means I don't have to go out and re-register all my french domains with the proper accents in order to protect them, though I will do this for at least some of them.  I'm interested to see if they will get more traffic with the correct IDN version, or better search engine placement.  From my research, many french users do use accents when searching on the net and typing in domains.

Last fall, the Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA) invited you to participate in a consultation about our proposed implementation of French characters (also known as Internationalized Domain Names, or IDNs) in .CA domain names.

That first phase of our consultation has now closed. Based on this feedback from .CA holders, Members and other stakeholders, CIRA has revised its proposal for launching IDNs.

We are now inviting you to read our revised proposed policy and share your thoughts on some of the changes we've made in this final round of consultation at idnconsultation.ca.

  

This next round of consultations ends Feb 24, so if you have any comments there is just under a month left to submit them.

'Thunderous' .ca domain sale at DNS

From time to time I like to check in at DomainNameSales.com to see what domains they are getting inquiries on, the price quotes DNS is sending back, and the list of domains that end up selling.  It is actually getting quite addictive when you get to follow through the whole sales process on so many domains.

I also like to check for action on .ca domains, because DNS does own some .ca's.

One .ca sale that popped up on Jan 20 was thunderroad.ca for under $3,000.  My first thought with this domain was that maybe a Bruce Springsteen fan bought it in honor of his famous song, but the webpage right now for it shows a car care centre with a nice picture of an old black Mustang.

Another .ca domain sold on Jan 24, this one was badcreditloans.ca.  The selling price range was listed as N/A, but good loan financial keywords usually go for a good price.

DNS has sold some other interesting names in the last few days, including:

Does anyone know if DNS only sells Name Administration domains, or do they sell domains for other owners on their parking platform too?

TBR .ca dropped domains Jan 25, 2012

This week's .ca TBR domain drop was a whopper!  The total number of dropped domains was in the neighborhood of 7,000.  Out of these, 238 domains were grabbed.

An interesting sidenote, I noticed that the domain facetime.ca was dropped and picked up this week.  When my kids first got their ipods, one of the things they did a lot with their friends was called 'facetiming'.  It's an app that lets you see the person and talk to them on an ipod screen.  Facetiming is done completely through the internet, so you can save on long distance charges or cellphone minutes, as long as you have free WIFI.  After learning about this, I remember checking for the domain facetime.ca.  It was taken, but what was more interesting was who the owner was.  The domain belonged to the Herjavec Group.  If you watch Dragon's Den on television, you'll know that one of the dragons is Robert Herjavec, who is the CEO and founder of the Herjavec Group, an internet security company.  I wonder if they dropped the domain on purpose, or was it a mistake?  And why did they even own it in the first place?

Two .CA domain names in Weekly Report

DomainReport.ca

There were two .ca domain sales reported in this week's DNJournal report.  One of them made the top 20 list for all domain sales, and both were in the top 12 for country code domain sales.

The two sales were:

Treo.ca - $10,000 sold at Afternic DLS

ePhone.ca - $6,000 private sale by eMall.ca

Treo.ca was the #18 sale for all domains, and #6 on the country code chart.  ePhone.ca took the #12 spot on the country code chart.

I couldn't find much information on these domains, the pages don't resolve or are parked.  ePhone.ca has domain privacy, and Treo.ca shows as being owned by Ryan Murphy in Vancouver (the domain on the contact email is ticorp.ca which doesn't resolve).

Regardless, these were two nice sales for the .ca domain market.  Hopefully there will be lots more activity and sales in the Canadian market to report on in 2012!

TBR .ca dropped domains Jan 18, 2012

Over 6,000 .ca domains dropped on Wednesday this week, the largest .ca drop in a long time.

Out of those dropped domains, only 107 were picked up in the TBR.  In recent weeks, about 5,000 domains have dropped at TBR, and around 200 were picked up.  I was wondering if this week's low pick up was due to low quality drops, or low participation.  From a few people I've talked to who scanned most of the list, it appears that the low catching was because it was a low quality week.  Still, there were some decent domains available.

I picked one up this week myself, which was edj.ca

Petzone.com sells for Six Figures at DNS Marketplace

From time to time I check the domain sales posted at DomainNameSales.com, and tonight I noticed that there was a big sale on January 15.

Petzone.com - sold for $100,000 to $150,000

It looks like this domain sold last October for $7,601 so that is a fantastic return for the seller.  Not many investments you could have made in the last three months that would have given that percent gain!

there was another large sale today, Jan 16:

Boatloans.com - sold for $50,000 to $100,000

DNS only gives a selling price range, not the actual price, however it is still valuable information if you are trying to gauge the domain market.  Most of the sales right now are listed as taking place at Sedo or the DNS site.  Domains sold at Sedo would have the actual price reported at Sedo.  Also, if the petzone.com and boatloans.com sales get reported to DNJournal, we may see an exact price for each.

DNS is an interesting site because you literally get to see the whole domain selling filter system, from inquiry, to price quote given, to a final sale or not.  So far I've seen several names get inquiries, quotes and sales every day, so there is always something new to see.  Most domains seeing action are .com's, but you will also see other extensions like .ca, .net, .org, .es, .co.uk, .biz, and .tv from time to time.  A recent change to the site put the domains sold section in the center of the page near the top, which was a good move.  The comments section where many people are trying to sell their own domains was moved down the page, also a good change!

About the two sold domains themselves?  I'm not surprised to see them sell for the prices they did, for the following reasons.

Boatloans.com speaks for itself and will give the new owner an intuitive name for that market and likely some type-in traffic.

Petzone.com is a highly brandable domain name.  Take any good or great keyword and put 'zone', 'web', 'world' or 'space' after it, for example, and chances are it's now a highly brandable term and has value in the .com extension.

I recommend checking in at DNS regularly as one tool to monitor the health of the domain name market.
